The poem by Robert Frost, Road Less Traveled, is now set to music by Alex Genadinik. This has been set to music several times before. This post is a review of Alex Genadinik’s version of Road Less Travelled.

The Meanings of Road Less Travelled

Road Less Travelled is about having different options in life. Each road we take is also a different decision on what we want to do with our lives. For instance, do you want to get a job, write a book, start a business, go to University, etc. Each of these is a separate road and we will have unique experiences along each road.

Song Lyrics

Verse One

Bracing for the glistening sword Another blow cut my battle short This moment echoed in my mind and didn’t budge As dignity became my judge

Chorus

Awareness wants to look away But her imagination likes to play Regret and pride fought as my mind unraveled Looking back at my road less travelled

Verse 2

Time heals unless self-pity’s your romance Wrong decisions kept me in a trance My baggage heavier, still I forged on Can’t veer off my road….too much time gone Looking back at my road less travelled

Bridge

I fought myself right from the start Keeping me from fully following my heart Don’t wish my road on anyone — it pained and left me stunned But you know what I faced it, fought, wavered, but didn’t run.

Verse 3

I thought I’d give another chance my all, Deep down I knew I’d cause myself to fall And though I’ve often longed for days without strife, What can I do? This turmoil made my life.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay In leaves, no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

Instruments Used in Road Less Travelled

Apart from the guitar and vocal parts, there is also a piano and maybe a cello.

Thoughts on Road Less Travelled

My favourite part of Road Less Travelled is the bridge. That is the fun bit and it must have been fun for Alex to perform it. The rest of the tune is good too, but the bridge is the best part. This is because it is slightly heavier.
